President Zuma to meet Chapter 9 institutions

President Jacob Zuma will tomorrow, 10 June 2011, meet with the Heads of the country’s Chapter 9 institutions, as part of his first-hand assessment of government performance.

These institutions, created in terms of Chapter 9 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, are independent and are subject only to the Constitution and the law.

They are the Public Protector, the South African Human Rights Commission, the Office of the Auditor-General, the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities, Electoral Commission of South Africa and the Gender Commission. 

The President wants to hear from the heads their own experience of government and what the public tells them about government, to enable government to improve its performance.

This first ever meeting is also aimed at enhancing working relations between government and these institutions.
