President Zuma to launch flagship housing project

President Jacob Zuma will launch a flagship social housing project for low to middle income earners in East London on Saturday, 19 June 2010.

Through the social housing programme, government provides grant funding to private developers to build rental homes for low and middle income workers in an effort to prevent the spiralling of slum houses in the cities.

The Emerald Sky project is one of many that will be launched to provide affordable housing to people in need, on well-located and landscaped land with access to social amenities such as education, transport, recreational facilities and others, as part of the government's new human settlements concept.

The projects are in line with the President's call during his State of the Nation Address to accommodate people whose salaries are too high to get government subsidies, but who earn too little to qualify for a normal bank mortgage.

The innovative housing project consists of 656 units, of which 350 units are already occupied.

Details of the event are as follows:
Date: 19 June 2010
Time: 10h00
Venue: Emerald Sky Housing Project, Amalinda, Haven Hill, East London, Eastern Cape
