President Zuma to host Armed Forces Day on the National Reconciliation Day

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu today received a final briefing on the logistics of the first Armed Forces Day to be addressed by the Commander in Chief, President Jacob Zuma on Reconciliation Day, December 16, 2010.

The Armed Forces Day is aimed at celebrating the efforts of military veterans and armed forces in protecting the nation and its security. This first Armed Forces Day will celebrate the efforts and sacrifices of liberation movement military veterans who sacrificed a lot to bring the freedom and democracy enjoyed today.

The day will include speeches, military parade by more than 1 500 soldiers from all services of the South African National Defence (SANDF) and fly pass by the South African Air Force.

The minister said the first armed forces day will go a long way to celebrate the sacrifices and efforts of liberation military veterans and also acknowledge transformation progress in the SANDF.

“This first Armed Forces Day on Reconciliation Day symbolises the start of a dedicated programme within the Departments of Defence and Military Veterans to recognise the efforts of military veterans and also to acknowledge the work of the SANDF. South Africans on this day will come together to honour our liberation struggle heroes and also acknowledged the work the SANDF is doing”.

The minister was briefed on logistics and the programme. More than 1 000 guests have been invited to the event to be held in Pretoria.
