President Jacob Zuma is visiting Gauteng province to experience the massive infrastructure developments around public transport systems and their impact on the lives of local residents. The visit will take place on Thursday, 14 June 2012.
The purpose of the visit is to showcase the available transport modes in and around the province and demonstrate the interoperability of the system and the seamlessness with which commuters go about in their daily business to and from their various destinations.
The visit will see the President Zuma making a trip, on public transport, from the City of Tshwane to Soweto in Johannesburg using the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA's) Metrorail services, the Gautrain Rapid Rail system as well as the Johannesburg' Bus Rapid system.
Earlier in the year, Transport Minister Sbusiso Ndebele announced that an amount of R123 billion will be utilised to improve rail infrastructure services. This will include the upgrading of rail infrastructure such as signalling, upgrading and building of new depots–the first over a period of 20 years. Government's overall plan is to elevate rail services to becoming the backbone of an effective, affordable, reliable and safe public transport system.
