President Jacob Zuma will on 20 October 2009, meet with more than 283 executive mayors and mayors accompanied by their municipal managers, to discuss the state of local government and service delivery improvement in the local government sphere.
The meeting follows previous service delivery improvement meetings that the President has been holding to improve dialogue and action within the public service, for example with school principals and the police.
The meeting will take place at the Oliver Tambo Hall in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.
In the State of the Nation Address, President Zuma committed himself and government to changing the way in which government performs its functions to ensure improved service delivery and a better life for all.
Local government is one critical area which needs an intensive focus of all spheres of government. The President has decided to take a more hands on approach in dealing with this and all matters of service delivery outlined the Minister for Performance Management, Evaluation and Administration in the Presidency, Collins Chabane.
President Zuma will be accompanied by the following Ministers:
* Monitoring and Evaluation Minister, Collins Chabane
* National Planning Commission Minister, Trevor Manuel
* Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan
* Human Settlements Minister, Tokyo Sexwale
* Economic Development Minister, Ebrahim Patel
* Health Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi
* Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Minister, Sicelo Shiceka
* Energy Minister, Dipuo Peters
* Social Development Minister, Edna Molewa
* Public Service and Administration Minister, Dr Richard Baloyi
* Transport Minister, Sbu Ndebele
* COGTA Deputy Minister Yunus Carrim and
* Directors-General.
President Zuma will also be joined by all nine Premiers and the MECs responsible for local government. The South African Local Government Association will also participate in the meeting.
