President to host special human settlements discussion

President Jacob Zuma is to host a special President's Coordinating Council (PCC) meeting focusing on the challenge of housing and building sustainable human settlements around the country on 18 May 2010.

The PCC is a forum in which the president engages with the premiers as well as the leadership of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA).

In the 2009 State of the Nation Address, President Zuma stated that housing is not just about building houses. "It is also about transforming our cities and towns and building communities with closer access to work, social amenities, including sports and recreation facilities".

The meeting will be designed to explore the progress made in all nine provinces and to harmonise and strengthen solutions in all spheres.

The media is invited to cover the opening of the meeting by the president.
