President Jacob Zuma will on the 30 September, host older persons from around the country at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guest House, to celebrate the International Day of Older Persons.
The President and the Minister for Social Development Ms Bathabile Dlamini and her deputy Ms Maria Ntuli will be joined for the special celebration with the country’s older citizen by the Minister in the Presidency, Mr Collins Chabane, Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Gauteng Premier, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, the Minister of Police, Mr Nathi Mthethwa and the Executive Mayor of Tshwane Mr Kgosientso Ramokgopa.
On 14 December 1990, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly designated October 1 each year as the International Day of Older Persons. The International Day of Older Persons was observed for the first time throughout the world on 1 October 1991.
President Zuma will host the celebration on 30 September on the eve of the UN’s official day.
The President intends to use the day to encourage society to reflect on the contribution of older persons to society in general and also galvanise communities to provide care and support to those older persons in need of care.
The international day will also highlight issues affecting older persons such as health, social security, safety and security including abuse as well as lifestyle and contribution to society in general through living heritage and scarce skills.
