Premier Mokonyane to help rebuild councillors' burnt down houses in Chiawelo, Soweto

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane will on Sunday, 17 July 2011 visit two councillors in Chiawelo, Soweto whose houses were set alight by a mob early this week. The aim of the visit is to help rebuild the destroyed houses.

The houses of Mirriam Ramafola and Joe Nemaungane were burned by Chiawelo residents protesting against Eskom’s electricity costs, claiming they were too high after the installation of pre-paid electricity metres.

In the spirit of Mandela Month, Mokonyane is appealing to residents of Gauteng and challenging private companies to open their hearts and wallets by donating building materials, time, and skills to rebuild the homes of the two councillors.

“We can never compensate them for emotional distress they are going thorough but we can assist in restoring their dignity,” said Mokonyane.
