North West Premier, Thandi Modise, and her MECs will be at Mafikeng Provincial Hospital on Friday to ease the burden on hospital staff by offering their services as part of their 67 minutes contribution during Mandela Week.
This will be a culmination of a highly successful Mandela Week campaign which saw ordinary North West resident, public servants and leaders embracing the values and principles of our elder statesman and international icon by making a making a difference in the lives of ordinary citizens.
The Friday programme at Mafikeng Provincial Hospital will see all MECs, Heads of Department and senior managers from the Office of the Premier descending on the hospital to assist in cooking meals for patients, cleaning wards, washing babies, ironing clothes and cleaning the yard. The visit to the hospital will also provide the leadership of the province with an opportunity to see for themselves the challenges and constraints that hospital staff operate under.
Meanwhile the Premier expressed satisfaction with the way the people of the North West gave expression to the spirit of Madiba during the week. In particular, she congratulated South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) North West, Platinum Stars, North West FM, the provincial legislature and provincial government departments for setting time aside to make a difference in the lives of those who are less fortunate.
“What these organisations and others have done and continue to do is in keeping with the spirit of Nelson Mandela who dedicated his entire life to the emancipation of the oppressed. Alleviating poverty and addressing the plight of the poor is consistent with the spirit of Nelson Mandela,” said the Premier.
The Premier challenged all those who participated in this week’s campaigns to ensure that their good work do not become a once-off event. “We must ensure that our positive contributions become sustainable and continue to make a positive impact in the lives of those we seek to empower. Those who cannot help themselves expect nothing less from us”.
Premier Modise added, “In line with the spirit of Mandela, we must do all these good things without expecting any personal reward or glory. Ours must be selfless service. Mandela Day must not be abused as a public relations exercise. It must be a genuine contribution to the task of improving the lives of our fellow citizens.”
On Monday, the Premier joined President Jacob Zuma and other national leaders at Lilliesleaf Farm to launch a campaign to push the ANC membership to one million as part of its centenary celebrations. “This is a fitting tribute to Nelson Mandela who spend all his life to build a strong ANC that has the capacity and discipline to change the lives all people for the better.”
