Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements to Hold Public Hearings on Rental Housing Amendment Bill

In keeping with Parliament’s objective of ensuring public participation, the parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements will hold public hearings on the Rental Housing Amendment Bill.

The Rental Housing Amendment Bill seeks to ensure that all MECs (provincial ministers) establish rental tribunals in their respective provinces. Currently, this is not the practice. But some provinces have only recently established tribunals after intervention by the Department of Human Settlements.

The reasoning behind ensuring tribunals in all provinces is informed by the fact that all provinces are faced with similar rental housing challenges, whether they are formal or backyard tenants or dwellers. Public hearings will be held in Parliament on Wednesday and Thursday.

Details are as follows:
Time: 09h00
Venue: V227, Old Assembly Building.
