Parliamentary committees to conduct oversight visits

As part of their mandate to oversee government departments and their entities, a number of parliamentary committees will go on oversight visits to different provinces from 4 to 8 June 2012.

The Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services will be visiting Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal to inspect conditions of jails and treatment of offenders. In addition, the Committee will monitor progress made in the construction of new generation prisons.

Meanwhile, the Portfolio Committee on Public Works will visit Limpopo to assess the progress made in the implementation of the second phase of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP). The Committee will also look at whether the Government Immovable Asset Register is being properly adhered to. The register is to ensure that government’s immovable assets are registered and properly looked after.

The PC on Sports and Recreation will go an oversight visit to the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Gauteng to assess the state of sports facilities built as part of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup legacy programme. The visit will focus on access, maintenance, security and mass participation of communities in sports activities using these facilities.
