Parliament visits Johannesburg's Leeuwkop Prison

Parliament’s Steering Committee on Youth Month led by its Chairperson Mduduzi Manana will tomorrow, Friday 24 June, visit Johannesburg’s Leeuwkop Correction Centre.

This visit is one of the activities of Parliament to mark Youth Month. Others include:

  • A debate by Parliament’s National Assembly on 8 June on the theme of “a caring Parliament that advances youth development to achieve economic freedom”.
  • A visit by Members of Parliament (MPs) to the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre in Faure to interact with youth people at the facility.

At Leeukop, the Committee, accompanied by representatives from the National Youth Development Agency, will spend time with young prisoners, interacting with them, and going on a tour of the prison.

Mr Manana has explained that Parliament would “adopt” the Leeuwkop Prison and the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre in Faure for a year. That means the committee and stakeholders will visit the facilities regularly to monitor progress around suggested interventions, report to Parliament on these oversight visits and engage the Executive.

Details of the event:
Date: 24 June 2011, Friday
