Parliament’s ad hoc committee on coordinated oversight on service delivery will on Monday kick-start its week-long provincial public hearings that are aimed at finding out more about progress on service delivery.
This 43-member committee chaired by Mr Lechesa Tsenoli has been divided into three groups with each group expected to hold hearings in at least three provinces. The first phase of provincial hearings will be held in the Eastern Cape; Western Cape and Mpumalanga next week 22 to 26 February.
The public hearings follow the National Assembly’s resolution to establish an Ad Hoc Committee to conduct oversight visits on service delivery under the theme “Working together to ensure the delivery of quality services to communities”.
Earlier this month, the committee held public hearings in Parliament on the matter. Members heard that shortage of skills and lack of funding for infrastructure are among the main hindrances to service delivery.
Members of the committee are drawn from the following committees: Human Settlements, Energy, Social Development, Health, Water and Environmental Affairs, Basic Education, Transport and Rural Development and Land Reform. Political organisations are represented proportionally as follows: African National Congress (ANC) 17; Democratic Alliance (DA) five; Cope three; Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) two and other parties two.
