Parliament receives briefing on compliance levels related to Domestic Violence Act, 5 Nov

The Portfolio Committee on Police will tomorrow (5 November) receive a briefing from the Civilian Secretariat for Police on the compliance levels related to the country’s Domestic Violence Act (DVA) as well as an update on how far the Secretariat is with the full implementation of the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service Act of 2011.

Committee Chairperson, Mr Francois Beukman, says it is very crucial for Parliament to ascertain that Acts such as the Domestic Violence Act are complied with, so as to ensure that they achieve their intended objectives of ensuring that the State eliminates all forms of domestic violence. Mr Beukman adds that the Domestic Violence Act, among other things, is aimed at affording victims of domestic violence the maximum protection from domestic abuse that the law can provide and as such has to be complied with all the time.

Turning to the briefing regarding the implementation of the Civilian Secretariat for Police Service Act, Mr Beukman says it is equally important for the Committee to monitor implementation of this Act, adding that this Act seeks to ensure that SAPS conducts its business in line with the Constitution. He adds that the Act was established to, among other things, provide for the civilian oversight of the police service and provide for cooperation with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate and the South African Police Service.
