Parliament launches Sports and Recreation Council

A Parliamentary Sports and Recreation Council is scheduled to be launched at Parliament on Wednesday, 17 November 2010, in the Old Assembly restaurant.

The Council seeks to coordinate all sporting codes at Parliament and to liaise with and take the idea of the Council to provinces.

The Council will also bring Members of Parliament and Parliamentary staff together, to interact informally around various sporting codes. This already occurs with the Parliamentary Rugby Team which has toured abroad, playing against other Parliamentary rugby teams.

Parliament’s National Assembly Deputy Speaker Ms Nomaindia Mfeketo will formally launch the Council at Parliament on Wednesday. The two hour launch Programme Director will be Mr Athol Trollip, the Democratic Alliance Parliamentary leader and speakers will include African National Congress Chief Whip Mr Mathole Motshekga, the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation Mr Butana Khompela and Member of Parliament Dr Zukile Luyenge, who will outline the mandate and purpose of the Council.

Delegates from all the provinces have been invited to attend the launch.
