Parliament launches the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children

Parliament’s Presiding Officers will on Thursday, 25 November, join the world in launching the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women and Children.

Members of Parliament, including those from Parliament’s Multi Party Women’s Caucus and Parliamentary Committees on Women, Youth, Children and People with Disabilities, civil society organisations and government departments have been invited.

The occasion will focus on what Parliament has achieved since democracy as far as passing laws that deal on issues related to violence against women in particular, such as the Domestic Violence Act. The 16 Days of Activism campaign aims to raise public awareness of negative impact of violence on women and children, to break the silence around this and to act against abuse.

It is an international campaign. It starts on 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and ends on 10 December (International Human Rights Day). The period includes universal Children’s Day and World AIDS Day.

At Thursday’s launch of the campaign, the South African Parliamentary Rugby Football Club will donate a cheque to Starfish, an Aids support organisation based in Cape Town.

The Parliament Rugby Football Club during its United Kingdom tour in November last year raised the funds with the aim of making a donation to a local charity.
