Parliament hosts seminar on role of legislatures in reaching Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

Parliament will next week host a seminar that focuses on the role of legislatures in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), adopted in 2000 by all member states of the United Nations General Assembly. 

Parliament’s National Assembly Speaker Mr Max Sisulu will open the seminar on Wednesday; Mr Roeland van de Geer, Ambassador and Head of the European Union (EU) delegation to South Africa, will deliver a message from the EU and Mr Trevor Manuel, Minister in the Presidency: National Planning Commission will provide an overview of South Africa’s progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. 

The 2011 International Consultative Seminar, which focuses on the role of Legislatures in achieving the MDGs, recognises the legislative sector’s role in evaluating and reviewing strategies and interventions and in forging consensus to ensure that our country meets its national commitments.   

Topics to be covered include:

  • South Africa’s comprehensive approach to eradication of poverty and hunger – with reference to resource allocation and support to rural communities to ensure rural development, food security and land reform
  • A quality South African education system that ensures equal economic participation.
  • A review of the legislative sector in achieving these two goals
  • Cooperation in ensuring environmental sustainability in South Africa, the continent and globally.
  • Harnessing aid and global partnerships for development in South Africa and the continent.
