Parliament to host Tourism Summit

The Portfolio Committee on Tourism will next week host a Tourism Summit that begins from 28 February until 1 March 2011.

The summit will be held at Parliament’s Old Assembly Chamber, and its theme is: "Working together for better tourism opportunities: An integrated approach to tourism development, growth and transformation”.

The summit aims to bring together the different stakeholders in the tourism sector. These stakeholders include representatives from the different spheres of government, the different departments that play a role in tourism development and growth, the private sector (established and small businesses), funding institutions and Tourism Associations.

Minister of Tourism Mr Martinus van Schalkwyk will deliver a keynote address at the summit.

This gathering will also provide the opportunity for all participants to share the experiences and challenges that face the tourism industry in the country; possible ways that advocate for inclusive growth, especially on the part of the committee, will be discussed.

Not only will this summit provide stakeholders with the platform to raise issues and concerns, it also seeks to forge unity between the public and private sectors to chart a way forward for better tourism in the country, through for example, maximising the benefits of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and continuing to use tourism to assist in the fight for job creation, rural development and the economic growth of the country.

As the largest economic sector in the world, tourism can produce revenues of up to 500 billion dollars annually and accounts for about 35 percent of exports of services with roughly 8 percent in goods exports. It has been identified as a priority economic sector due to its substantial contribution to job creation, surpassing manufacturing and other industries as well as its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.

After the summit a report will be put together and forwarded to relevant authorities for consideration. The outcome of this process will then be used as a reference in policy review and formulation.
