Parliament to host a Joint Sitting in recognition of the South African Olympic Team’s performance at the 2012 London Olympic games

Parliament will host a Special Joint Sitting of the National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Tuesday, 28 August 2012 to congratulate Team South Africa for its performance at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

On behalf of Parliament, the Presiding Officers, National Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu and NCOP Chairperson Mninwa Mahlangu will congratulate and acknowledge the role the SA Olympic Team played in nation building through their excellence in international sporting activities.

Team SA achieved an improved standing in the London-held games – improving South Africa’s ranking from a position in the 40’s, in Beijing 2008, to 24th in London 2012. The Team's return of gold, silver and bronze medals earned them 24th position in the overall standings.

Members of team South Africa will attend the joint sitting.

14h10: Team received by the Chairpersons of the Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation and of the Select Committee on Sport and Education and the Parliamentary Sport Council
14h30: The MPs and the Olympic Team meet and greet with the public will take placeat the front court next to the elephant at the Airport
14h35: Welcoming comments from Parliament
14h50: Departure

Tuesday - 28 August 2012

9h00: Arrival of Olympic Team at Slave Lodge and walk up Parliament Street to the steps of the National Assembly
9h30: The team assembles for a Group Photograph in front of the National Assembly Building
9h45: Bells ring - Members and Athletes seated
10h00: Joint sitting program commences
12h00: Lunch at Old Assembly Dining Hall (Media Invited). The Presiding Officers present the celebrated Team SA with a Parliamentary gift.
