Parliament Commemorates World Aids Day

Parliament will tomorrow, Thursday, join the world in commemorating World AIDS Day.   The Secretary to Parliament, Mr Zingile Dingani will deliver a message to Parliamentary officials at an occasion aimed at:  

  • Increasing awareness among Parliamentary officials about the HIV and AIDS epidemic.
  • Initiating fundraising efforts with the aim of donating to needy causes in the communities.
  • Encouraging HIV Testing and Counselling (HCT) within the Parliament community with the aim of decreasing the spread of HIV and AIDS epidemic.

The commemoration of World Aids Day for Parliamentary officials will focus on prevention, support and discouraging stigma. The event will also adopt the government’s theme for 2011 World Aids Day which is: ‘Zero new Infections, zero discrimination and zero Aids-related deaths’ Parliament has adopted Fikelela Children’s Centre in Khayelitsha as part of its outreach to communities affected and infected by HIV and AIDS. Parliamentary officials will be encouraged to donate Christmas gifts for the children living in the centre. Fikelela Aids Project provides care to abandoned children from birth to eight years.
