Oversight role of Legislatures to come under the spotlight at seminar

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is scheduled to address a seminar focusing on the oversight role of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures next week.

The Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Mr Mninwa Mahlangu, will welcome delegates and chair the opening session whilst the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr Max Sisulu will provide an overview of the South African Legislative Sector’s progress in terms of its oversight role. 

Mr Roeland van de Geer, Ambassador and Head of the European Union (EU) delegation to South Africa, will deliver a message on the EU’s role in supporting the South African Legislative Sector in strengthening oversight. 

Ms Baleka Mbete, former Deputy President of South Africa and former Speaker of the National Assembly, will also address the seminar. Ms Mbete was appointed recently to the African Peer Review Committee and will share insights on her new role and how it impacts on the Parliament of South Africa Parliament and Provincial Legislatures. 

Themed strengthening democracy through global collaboration of Legislatures on oversight”, the seminar aims to facilitate sharing of experiences, ideas and knowledge in the area of oversight. It will explore possibilities for developing partnerships with relevant organisations and institutions to enhance continued effectiveness of oversight in the South African Legislative Sector.

The newly-adopted Oversight Model for the South African Legislative Sector will also be launched at the seminar. The launch is scheduled for Wednesday, 14 March 2012.

The South African Legislative Sector hosts consultative seminars annually as part of its sector dialogue process with the EU.
