O.R Tambo Games

The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in collaboration with Lejweleputswa District Municipality, Matjhabeng Local Municipality and Sport and Recreation Councils will host the 8th Provincial O.R Tambo Games scheduled to take place from the 26 to 28 October 2012.

The games are in their 8th year since they were launched in 2005 by MEC Dan Kgothule while still at the Free State legislature as Deputy Director for community participation.

The inaugural games were hosted by Thabo Mofutsanyana District and Maluti a Phofung Municipality in 2005, followed by Fezile Dabi District and Metsimaholo Municipality in 2006. The games have been staged in Welkom from 2007 to date.

Through these games we have seen players being selected to represent the province at different categories at National and International levels. The games have now grown into a big sporting event in the province that attracts all participants and spectators.

The games are being organised and played from ward level through municipalities until the provincial finals. Only best players selected get an opportunity to represent their districts at the finals.

All four District Municipalities and the Metro will converge in Welkom from the 26 to the 28 October to compete in 3 different sporting codes namely: Netball for U/21, Rugby for Females and Males U/23 and Football for Females and Rural Football for Males. The games will play in a round robin system and the log leaders will then play in the semi- final and finals on Sunday 28 October 2012.
