The Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs in partnership with the Office of the Premier and Provincial Treasury will be launching operation clean audit in the Eastern Cape. This audit is a national initiative aimed at assisting all municipalities and government departments in the province to obtain clean audits by 2014, however, the Provincial Executive Council has set itself a target to eliminate all adverse opinions and disclaimers in municipalities and government departments by 2011.
The objectives of the launch are to:
* lend legitimacy to the initiative
* obtain the buy-in of the political and administrative leadership at both provincial and local government levels
* encourage participation by all relevant stakeholders in improving the audit outcomes in municipalities and provincial government departments
* harness all efforts from all spheres of government to improve governance and accountability by government or public institutions
* ensure that the resources and activities of all stakeholders are properly co-ordinated to ensure maximum impact of support rendered
* integrate all capacity building initiatives that aim at developing the capability of government institutions to properly perform their statutory responsibilities.
