2012 State of the Province Address
Date: 17 February 2012
Venue: Christian Revival Church
Time: 10:00 for 10:30
"The knowledge, economy and development opportunities"
The 4th Session of the Fourth Legislature, generally referred to as the Opening of the Legislature, will be held at the Christian Revival Church (CRC) on 17 February 2012.
The theme for the event is “The knowledge economy and development opportunities” and this is in line with the theme for the State of the Nation Address.
This year, approximately 1 800 people will be targeted to attend the event. This will include amongst others all Members of the Legislature, including the Executive and their guests as well as the general public from all the five regions of the province.
The decision to take the sitting indoors stems from predictions by the South African Weather Service (SAWS). SAWS have forecast that that the Kimberley area is likely to experience an above normal rainy season for the January to March period.
In the past the opening was accommodated in the Patlelo area of the Legislature by making use of marquees for shading. However, because of the rain predictions this is not suitable.
The Legislature precinct is unable to accommodate 1 800 people in one venue as the capacity of the chamber and gallery is 230 whilst the assembly area adjacent to the chamber can only accommodate 800 people seated bringing the total indoor capacity to just over 1 000 which is insufficient.
Furthermore previous experience has shown that accommodating guests in two adjacent venues is not very practical and therefore the CRC was selected as the most suitable venue as it is able to accommodate up to 2 000 people comfortably.
