The official opening of community farms and celebration of Nelson Mandela Day

The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ms Tina Joemat-Pettersson invites members of the media to the official opening of Matsila Community Farms in Ha-Matsila, Limpopo on 17 July 2011. 

The opening of these farms will form part of the build-up to the main celebration of Nelson Mandela Day which will be held in Giyani on 18 July 2011. In this regard, the Minister will lead a high-level delegation of MECs, MPs, MPLs, Mayors, Councillors and volunteers who will spend 67 minutes of their time working at the Matsila Chicken Farm where they will collect, grade, sort, clean and package eggs. These eggs will be donated to orphans, children with disabilities and deserving families in the community.

The Matsila Community Development Trust was established by the Matsila Royal Family in consultation with the community to facilitate and co-ordinate socio-economic development activities within Ha-Matsila Village and surrounding communities. To date, the projects comprise of 180 goats, a herd of cattle with 50 Nguni cows, two bulls and 4 000 free range birds with a capacity to lay 3 000 eggs per day.

The Matsila Community Development Trust in collaboration with Resource Africa is currently involved in a comprehensive rural development programme which is funded by the National Lottery Board and supported by government departments. 

The theme of the day will be “Poverty solutions, job creation and service delivery through sustainable development.”
