As part of the Department of Transport’s Road Safety Strategy, Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele will officially launch the 2010 Arrive Alive Easter Holiday Road Safety Plan.
Details of the event are as follows:
Date: Monday, 29 March 2010
Time: 11h30 for 12h00
Venue: Matshelapata Sports Ground, Mentz village, Polokwane (Next to Moria city), Limpopo province
The Minister will be joined by the MEC for Roads and Transport in Polokwane, MEC Pinky Kekana, Transport Director-General Mr. George Mahlalela, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), CEO of the Road Accident Fund (RAF), Road Safety ambassadors as well as key role-players in the transport sector.
“As we approach the Easter holidays, traffic volumes on the country’s roads are expected to increase. This is a time for families to come together and not a time for mourning. As part of the national traffic law enforcement plan, traffic law enforcement will be stepped up, particularly along busy routes and high accident frequency locations. We are going to be merciless towards all those who disregard road rules,” said Minister Ndebele.
As part of the event, Community Road Safety Councils in Limpopo will also be launched. As announced by Minister Ndebele at the national Road Safety Summit on 26 February 2010, Community Road Safety Councils will soon be part of every municipality in the country. “We want as many stakeholders as possible to actively participate in these Road Safety Councils, which will empower communities to identify road safety challenges and interventions in their respective localities and to act as ambassadors for road safety. Together, we can do more to prevent road deaths from ravaging our communities,” the Minister said.
