Background

The Department of Public Works through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) is currently implementing a number of community development projects in Hammanskraal to improve the lives of the people consistent with the EPWP mandate of alleviating poverty through the provision of work opportunities for the unemployed.

The projects that are currently being implemented in the Hammanskraal area include the construction of the Apies River Bridge at a total cost of R1,8 million. The objective of the construction of this bridge is mainly to connect Temba community to other parts of the Tshwane North area, to allow access to essential services and to assist 3 000 community members who cross the Apies River on a daily basis in pursuit of socio-economic amenities.

This project is a joint effort between the Department of Public Works and the Department of Defence and Military Veterans. The technology used in the construction of this bridge was developed in the military. Engineers from the South African National Defence Force were on site for two months to facilitate the construction process and transfer their skills to locals employed in the project. The project employed more than 20 local people and provides the following skills: welding, water purification and general construction skills.
