NWPL to conduct an oversight visit on the Lichtenberg - Koster road

The North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Public Works, Roads and Transport will be paying an oversight visit to the construction site of the road between Koster and Lichtenberg on Friday February 24, 2012 at 10h00.

The purpose of the visit is to check whether there is progress on the construction of this road as it has been plagued by a lot of protests from farmers, taxi drivers and people who use the road regularly.

Construction on this road had been put on hold by Premier Thandi Modise, after it emerged that the tender for the construction of this road has been a subject of court litigations between Globul Roads and Down Touch Investment Pty Ltd with allegations of irregularity in the bid process being levelled against the provincial department of Public Works, Roads and Transport.

The Portfolio Committee will meet on site with senior management responsible for roads at the provincial Department of Public Works to find out what the issue is with the road.

Chaiperson of the Portfolio Committee, Hon. Hoffman Galeng, said the road construction halt had caused delays in construction and therefore affecting date of completion. “This has caused a lot of inconvenience to the road users, especially farmers and taxi drivers. We want to find out ourselves who is responsible for the mess, who has been appointed now to continue with the construction of the road and when are they finishing it.

“We want to alleviate fears of all the users of this road by ensuring that the matter is speedily resolved and that construction is completed on time,” said Hon. Galeng.
