Nursing summit to examine challenges confronting nursing professionals

The North West Department of Health will host the Provincial Nursing summit on 4 March 2011 at Mmabatho Convention Centre scheduled to start at 09h00. The summit will provide a timely opportunity for the nursing professionals to share ideas and energy relating to the long-term challenges confronting the nursing workforce. This is in preparation to the National Nursing Summit to be held later this month. 

The aim is for the Nursing summit to highlight issues that are of central concern to the future of the profession as well as to underscore the importance and centrality of nurses in achieving the health outcomes and thus contribution to the success of the government’s health reform agenda and vision of “A long and Healthy Life for all South Africans”.

Objectives

1. Reflect critically and discuss key issues affecting nurses and the nursing profession.
2. Examine how nursing education and training can be improved to ensure alignment to patients and community needs.
3. Examine critically and discuss the draft nursing scopes of practice.
4. Discuss how nursing research can contribute to the priority areas identified at the summit
5. Reflect critically on how the conference recommendations could inform the revision of the National Nursing Strategy in order to represent the aspirations of all nurses in South Africa.
