Nursing in South Africa set for major over-haul as Health Minister convenes summit

Nursing in South Africa is set for a major over-haul as Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi will be hosting the nursing summit expected to be opened by the country's President Mr Jacob Zuma on 5 April 2011.

The summit comes as health Minister is introducing various measures geared at improving the performance of the public health sector and improve human resources development and management in the health sector. Nursing has been identified as being key in the performance of the public health system and in the implementation of the primary healthcare approach the Department of Health is following in delivering health services in the country.

The following are some of the key issues that are expected to be addressed at the summit:

  • Reconstruction and revitalisation of the nursing profession
  • Nursing education and training
  • Ethical and value system of nursing
  • Planning, resourcing and financing nursing
  • Creating an enabling environment for nursing: The role of the nurse in the improvement of health outcomes.  

Expected to be attended by hundreds of current and retired nurses, the summit is expected to produce a Nursing Compact which will be a guiding tool in the development of nursing in South Africa.
