The Golden Games for Older Persons project consists of a series of competitive, but fun track and field events for people over the age of 60.The aim of this project is to improve the quality of life of older persons and their families, and to promote awareness programs with respect to physical and recreation activities and safety on their behalf. Except for encouraging Active Ageing, it also aims to improve integration between population groups that have historically not had a chance to interact.
Golden Games for Older Persons was first piloted by the Department of Social Development in the Western Cape in 2006, in partnership with the Non-Governmental Organisation, Age-in-Action. After a presentation at a National Coordinators meeting, a decision was taken to replicate the project in other provinces in the future.
The Eastern Cape joined the project in 2008, with the Northern Cape piloting in 2009.The ultimate aim of the project is to stage the project annually in all provinces, in order to build up to a “Golden Olympics” which would forge links with international groups.
The Northern Cape Golden Games Team will be departing for Rustenburg North West on Monday 08 October 2012 at 10h00 to participate in the National Golden Games Competition from the Horseshoe Motel in Kimberley.
The media is hereby invited to the Horseshoe Motel from where the team will be departing.
