The Northern Cape Provincial MEC of Health, Mr MS Sokatsha, invites all media to the provincial Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and Condom Awareness Week event. The event will take place at Kutlwanong square, Club 2000, Galeshewe-Kimberley in the Frances Baard district of the Northern Cape province.
STI and Condom Awareness Week is one of the most important national focus weeks of the Department of Health because of the relationship between STIs and the spread of HIV and AIDS. Educating all South Africans on STIs, their prevention, treatment and link between STIs and various other health challenges including HIV and AIDS are important foundations of our public health campaign.
The theme for the 2009 STI and Condom Awareness Week campaign is 'Love me enough to protect me from STIs, HIV and unwanted pregnancy'.
The primary goal of the STI and condom awareness campaigns is to alert the Northern Cape population at large about the rising syphilis incident rate in the province and how to prevent syphilis; hence we embarked on a door-to-door campaign, visiting families and individuals at their homes. This endeavour will always afford us an opportunity to interact with members of the public and provide on the spot responses in terms of any kind of misunderstanding and misinterpretation of information.
Other dignitaries expected to accompany the MEC of Health are members of the executive council, members of the provincial portfolio committee of Health, the executive mayor and mayor of Frances Baard district municipality and Sol Plaatje local municipality respectively, representatives from the Department of Health.
