North West's turn to interface with the Public Protector on RDP houses, taxis and other service delivery issues

Three weeks after the launch of the Public Protector National Stakeholder Consultative Forums, communities in North West will this week be afforded an opportunity to interface with Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela on matters relating to Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) houses and illegal conversion of panel vans into taxis.

This is as part of the annual Dialogue whose theme for this year is: “Joining hands to end maladministration and ensure responsive service delivery: Focus on RDP houses and regulatory gaps on the illegal conversion of panel vans into taxis.”

Held over two days, the events combine the dialogue with public hearings where stakeholders share their experiences on problems surrounding RDP houses and the conversion of vans into taxis.

The Public Protector and her team’s first stop in the province will be in Matlosana on Thursday, where she will dialogue with the communities on issues of RDPs and conversion of panel vans during an outreach event.

Members of the community are encouraged to bring matters affecting a group or a community to the Public Protector while a stall manned by Public Protector investigators, will be set outside the venue for individual complaints.

The outreach event in Klerksdorp will be followed by a dialogue between the Public Protector and provincial executives, government officials, political parties, civil society and experts during a formal stakeholder meeting at the Provincial Legislature in Mahikeng.

The issues to be addressed at both events emanate from ongoing systemic investigations into RDP housing problems and regulatory gaps in the illegal conversion of panel vans into taxis. They include waiting lists, procurement concerns, quality of homes, conveyance arrangements, sale of RDP homes, allegations of corruption, regulatory framework and accountability for challenges such as safety and passenger insurance.

The campaign is in line with the constitutional injunction that the Public Protector should be accessible to all persons and communities.

The programme has already seen the Public Protector interface with communities of Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Free State.

The outreach event will be held as follows:
Date: Thursday, 2 August 2012
Time: 10h00
Venue: Town Hall, Klerksdorp (Matlosana)

The formal stakeholder meeting will be held as follows:
Date: Friday, 3 August 2012
Time: 09h30
Venue: Provincial Legislature, Mahikeng
