The Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison have completed an investigation on the upgrading of informal settlements in the Province. MEC Desbo Mohono will receive the report on the investigation that has been continuing for the past five years. The investigations were carried out by the South African National Space Agency and will officially be handed over in Rustenburg at Kedar Lodge on Friday.
The Informal Settlement Upgrading Programme was adopted by government in 2004, as part of the Breaking New Ground (BNG) Policy. Through BNG, government committed to “eradicate” all informal settlements by the year 2014,province together with their sister municipalities were assigned the responsibility to plan and execute the required programmes and projects.
The aim of the initiative was to investigate and establish the baseline of informal settlements in the province, for purposes of informing programme and project planning; It was envisaged that the project would produce accurate and reliable data, required for the roll-out of upgrading projects in the province.
About 70% of informal settlements in the province are in Bojanala District, with over 77 000 dwellings or households. Media is invited to be part of the official handing over.
