North West takes HIV and AIDS awareness to farms

The North West Department of Health and Social Development will tomorrow, 27 November 2009 kick start HIV and AIDS awareness calling for recommitment against the pandemic and to mobilise communities to step up efforts to reduce HIV infections as build-up activities towards World AIDS Day 2009 on 1 December. The HIV and AIDS awareness will concentrate mainly in farms and hot spots in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District till 1 December.

Health promoters from the department will be joined by community health care workers, non governmental organisations and the district municipality to call for a responsible lifestyle.

North West will commemorate World AIDS Day in Tosca, Kagisano Molopo Local Municipality, commemoration starts at 09h00.

The 2009 World AIDS Day will be commemorated under the theme “I am responsible, we are responsible, South Africa is taking responsibility,” which calls for collective response to HIV and AIDS. The theme encourages everyone in South Africa from individuals, communities, business and government to take personal and collective responsibility to stop new infections, provide care and support to those living with HIV and to ensure access treatment for all people in need.

On Saturday, MEC Rebecca Kasienyane will join Elizabeth Shadi in Lethlakane Village, Mafikeng Local Municipality at 11h00 to handover food parcels. Mrs. Shadi has for the past 30 years been providing food parcels to over 600 senior citizens and the disabled. MEC Kasienyane will use the prospect to assess how best she can support the initiative since it’s not a registered non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
