The North West Provincial Legislature will be hosting its annual Older Persons’ Parliament on Monday, 22 October 2012 in the Legislature Chamber at 10h00.
The event themed, “recreational opportunities for the aged in enhancing the quality of life,” aims to facilitate participation of senior citizens and evaluate progress made in entrenching democratic values; to raise sharp debates around equality, uphold democracy as well as facilitate a direct oversight exercise involving the Legislature, the Executive and the electorate in one sitting.
It will also create a platform for Older Persons’ to raise challenges on issues that affect them, making recommendations to relevant portfolio committees for them to hold departments and all relevant structures accountable, and report back to them about responses from departments on issues raised.
Thematic areas to be discussed are the following, activities for the elderly, and enhancing older persons’ quality of life. About 400 elders are expected to attend the event with relevant stakeholders that deal directly with the welfare of senior citizens ranging from Non-governmental Organisations (NGO’s), Community- Based Organisations (CBO’S), Sangoco,Sangala, Department of Social Development, Children and People with disabilities, the Department of Health and Office of the Premier to ensure that the needs of older people are addressed in the province.
