North West Provincial Legislature to hold public hearing for Public Participation Framework

The North West Provincial Legislature together with the South African Legislative Sector (SALS) will be conducting a public hearing at the Legislature Chamber on Tuesday, 16 October 2012 at 9h00.

The purpose of the public hearing is to develop a Public Participation Framework which intends to assist Parliament to facilitate effective public involvement in the Legislative processes as prescribed by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Act of 1996.

The public hearing will be attended by more than 500 people from all four districts of the province. The stakeholders will include traditional leaders, academics, religious organisations, chapter 9 institutions, political parties and organised labour.

Inputs will include views about current public involvement mechanisms and reflections on potential mechanisms that are not used in South Africa, to look at the support the communities need to ensure effective participation and what people expect to be done with the products of their participation in the processes of Legislatures.

The scope covers only public involvement activities of the National and Provincial spheres of the SALS. However, the intention is that in future the framework should include the Local Government sphere of the sector where public involvement practices of Local Councils will be explored and included as part of the framework.

All members of the media are invited to attend. For more information contact Namhla Luhabe at 079 527 0628.
