North West Provincial Legislature to Conduct Public Hearings on Traditional Courts Bill [B1 2012]

The North West Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Local Government and Traditional Affairs will be conducting public hearings on the Traditional Courts Bill, 2012.

The public hearings will be held at Barolong Boora Tshidi Recreational Hall in Mahikeng and at Potchefstroom Banquet Hall on Wednesday, 16 May 2012, at 10h00.

The Hearings will also be held at Tlhabane Community Hall in Rustenburg and at Batlhaping baga Phuduhuutswana in Taung on Friday, 18 May 2012. All public hearings start at 10h00.

The aim of the Bill is to affirm the values of the traditional justice system, based on restorative justice and reconciliation and to align them with the Constitution. To provide for the structure and functioning of traditional courts, in line with Constitutional imperatives and values. To enhance customary law and the customs of communities observing a system of customary law; and to provide for matters connected therewith.

Chairperson of the Committee, Hon. Auchalie Mothupi, said people must come and be part and parcel of these public hearings so they can voice their views on the Bill.

“People should come to hear the content of the Bill, so that if there is any Section they want revised or to add something on, they can use the platform given to them.

“The views and inputs from all affected communities, especially those who live in rural areas, where there are traditional councils are very critical.

“This will give them a chance to voice their opinions and also to enable the portfolio committee to have a position as the province, which we can send to the National Council of Provinces,” said Hon. Mothupi.
