North West Provincial Government hosts National Liberation Heritage Route Summit

The National Heritage Council in collaboration with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture - North West Provincial Government will be hosting the National Liberation Heritage Route Summit from 5 to 6 April 2011, at Rustenburg Orion Safari Lodge, at 09h00.

The aim of the summit is to consult with the public and all stakeholders with regards the most acceptable approach to make this project people orientated. The summit will bring together people from different sectors across society and government under one roof to discuss the best possible heritage route for the province. This project is believed to have a high potential to activate economic markets and job opportunities that only the heritage of this country can facilitate.

The Liberation Heritage Route has been initiated as a celebration of a national memory associated with the history of the struggle for freedom or liberation. It is an initiative borne out of the need to manage the legacy of the national liberation struggle. The Liberation Heritage Route seeks to document as well as preserve the memory of the liberation movements, through archival documentation, oral historical research and the identification and protection of heritage sites related to the liberation struggle.

The route is aimed at capturing the composite Will of the people to recall and remember their history by telling a coherent story on the road to freedom- telling stories about those who fought and sacrificed their lives for freedom. The project is also about re-enacting - demonstrating the struggle for freedom and symbolises the eminence and importance of liberation processes. The route will be listed on the World Heritage register as the first of its kind to be recognised by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee.

The North West Premier, Thandi Modise , MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Hlomane Chauke and CEO of the NHC, Advocate Sonwabile Mancotywa will lead a delegation of government leaders who are expected to attend the summit.
