North West province selects future stars

The North West Department of Sport, Arts and Culture together with North West Sport Federations continue to nurture talent of young people in the province by giving them an opportunity to showcase their talents and afford them a platform to build their future. One platform that has revealed success is the South Africa (SA) Games, where young people across the province will participate in 14 sporting codes to unleash their talents. The games further ensure full integration of sport for athletes with disabilities and sport in general.

The SA Games concept has evolved over time dating back to nineties. During this period, the former National Sports Council and the National Department of Sports and Recreation staged them as development games. The establishment of South African Sports Commission (SASC) through the enactment of South Africa Sports Commission Act No: 109 of 1998 saw the birth of the SA Games.

The games are presented as a sound mechanism geared towards maximising efforts to produce world-class sports stars, and as a programme that is set to revive the fading sporting spirit and culture among youth in our communities and at schools. It is through these games that aspiring stars from all the provinces are given an opportunity to participate in a multicoded event and to showcase their talent in sport.

As a build up towards Provincial SA games each district will have its own selections starting from the 11 to 18 June 2011 for the provincial event to take place on the 25June 2011.Activities to take place are soccer, netball, hockey, golf, tennis, table tennis, cricket and rugby. Participation in all codes is arranged according to age and gender.

Selected individuals from the Province will compete at the national SA Games planned for October 2011 in Polokwane.

Media is invited to support and cover both districts and provincial games that will take place as follows:
