North West Province to host the Community Development Worker Summit

Members of the media are invited to the provincial Community Development Worker (CDW) summit to be held on 26 November 2009 at the Mmabatho Convention Centre.

The main objective of the provincial summit is to consult stakeholders at a provincial level on the content of the community development worker policy. The development of the community development worker policy is derived from a gap that has been identified between the provision of government service and the effective utilisation of service delivery by members of poor and disadvantaged communities.

This programme is an integral part of government’s access strategy, designed for the purpose of accelerating service delivery by taking government services to communities. The Deputy Minister for the Public Service and Administration, Mr Roy Padayachee will be in the province to attend to challenges and consequently draft a policy that will aid in the acceleration of service delivery in a practical manner through community development workers.

Leading on the provincial perspective on service delivery and the Community Development Worker programme, will be the MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Gordon Kegakilwe. The summit will be attended by diverse stakeholders including:

* community development workers
* MECs and heads of department responsible for the programme
* municipal representatives
* community development workers’ regional coordinators
* sectoral community development workers (for example: agriculture, health, labour, social development)
* non-governmental organisation (NGOs) community based organisations (CBOs)

* Office of the Premier
