North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono is to finally launch a housing development project to benefit the impoverished Skierlik and the small mining community of Mazista near Swartruggens. The programme for the historic milestone is scheduled to commence at 11h00 on Friday, 10 June 2011.
The project initiated in partnership with Kgetleng Rivier Local Municipality to address housing needs of mostly former farmworkers evicted from the Koster and Swartuggens farming communities was stalled due to an interdict and protracted legal battle by local farmers. Beneficiaries of the project include victims of the Skierlik racial shooting incident.
The project is expected to be completed in the next few months after the court ruled in favour of the North West Provincial Government. The project is one of the interventions by government aimed at restoring the dignity of the previously marginalised, poor and homeless through eradication of informal settlements across the province.
