Ninety learners from high schools across the North West province are to compete in a technology transfer project, the Participatory Education Technique (PET) programme aimed at changing learners' attitude towards road safety by means of participatory education. The provincial competition to be hosted by the North West Department of Public Safety is to be held on Thursday, 15 October 2009, at Klerksdorp Protea Hotel.
The objective of the programme is to encourage learners to identify road safety problems in their communities and to find solutions by way of research to the problem thereby providing them with a hand-on opportunity in solving their community road safety problems.
The roll-out of the Pilot project directed at high schools (grade 10 and 11) is an initiative of the Road Traffic Management Corporation in partnership with the North West Departments of Public Safety and Education.
Research workshops were conducted by the North West Department of Public Safety in June to empower participating school teams, who are to be adjudicated on models and presentations illustrating their community road safety problem and researched solutions.
Winners in the competition will proceed to represent the province at the national competition to be held on the 28 November 2009 in KwaZulu-Natal.
