North West launches Magnificent Fridays

North West Department of Sport, Arts and Culture will launch the “Magnificent Fridays” Campaign on Thursday, 17 February 2011 at Tsetse Village, Ramatlabama.

The Magnificent Friday’s campaign is an initiative of the National Department of Sport and Recreation intended to galvanise the entire nation to stand behind the national cricket, netball and rugby heroes and help them achieve their best in their respective international tournaments scheduled for 2011.

The tournaments for both Cricket and Rugby are for World Cup while that of Netball is the World Championships. Magnificent Fridays comprises of five major activities:

Mass mobilisation

Communities are mobilised to wear their cricket, netball and rugby jerseys every Friday from now until the end of the year to show support towards participation of the national teams in the upcoming world cups.

Coordinating community outreach programmes in rural parts of our country to address the social imbalances by reaching the majority of the disadvantaged South Africans.

Sport development

Ensure continuum development by providing themed coaching clinics to as many communities as possible. Coaches will be selected in a community and be trained in various aspects of sport development.

Sport education

Ensure continued education on various sport concepts and the culture of sport. Society to learn the game and participate in various sport codes irrespective of their backgrounds

Leaving a lasting legacy

Every community that will be visited, a legacy must be left to ensure continued participation in sport. Sporting equipment will be donated to provide support to the developmental programmes.

Greening for Sport Campaign

The department will contribute to the greening goal campaign by assisting with the emission of carbon monoxide and provide an environmentally friendly country. Trees will be planted at majority of our events, in many of our sport facilities around South Africa.

North West Cricket will during the launch hand over food parcels and cricket world cup shirts to 100 kids who will be participating in the development coaching clinics programme. They will also conduct development coaching in all four districts on the

Magnificent Friday’s for the duration of the Cricket World Cup.

The Magnificent Fridays programme initiative intends to promote social cohesion and nation - building, also to mobilise society towards greater levels of national pride and unity. Communities are therefore encouraged to support the three National teams every Friday, to sing the National anthem and to fly the national flag. Through this initiative the department will have the opportunity to educate communities about the national symbols.
