The North West Provincial Government is intensifying its war on corruption. The Premier of the North West, Ms Thandi Modise, is determined to ensure that corruption is defeated to enable service delivery and good governance to flourish.
On Thursday, the Premier will lead a Round Table discussion in Rustenburg on the impact of corruption on service delivery. This is a partnership initiative which includes the North West University and the Provincial Anti-Corruption Forum. Those expected to attend are MECs, other senior government officials and various organisations of civil society.
High among the priorities of the North West government is to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities as part of building a new society. It is not possible to achieve the objectives of a better life for all if resources meant to improve the lives of the poor are diverted into the pockets of individuals. Corruption is an enemy of service delivery and effective governance. The fight against fraud and corruption can only be won if all our people choose to become combatants for clean governance.
Corruption has a negative impact on the poor, who bear the brunt of this scourge the most. The provision of potable water, quality education, health-care, better infra-structure will always be an illusion if public resources find their way into the pockets of corrupt officials and their partners. Government will find it extremely hard to deliver basic services if funds allocated for service delivery such as improvement of roads and the health-care system, etc land in the pockets of corrupt officials.
The fight against fraud and corruption can only be won if ordinary citizens join hands with government. Government urges people to blow the whistle against fraud and corruption and make suggestions how this scourge can be effectively combated. We urge all the people of the North West, including public servants, business and civil society to join government in order to defeat the scourge of corruption.
