North West to host summit to assess 16 days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children

The North West Department of Public Safety is to host a Provincial Summit to assess progress of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign. The one day summit is scheduled to commence at 10h00 at the Mmabatho Civic Centre tomorrow, Wednesday, 25 November 2009.

The keynote address at the event that marks the provincial launch of this year’s campaign will be delivered by Premier of North West, Mme Maureen Modiselle.

According to MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa, the objective of the summit is to assess progress of the campaign on gender violence issues over the past five years with a view to develop a five year programme of action (PoA) that can be assessed annually.

The summit is expected to respond to among others:

- Achievements of the campaign
- Challenges and threats encountered
- Identify interventions and areas for improvement
- Develop a Programme of Action for 2010 – 2014 per target milestones of the next 365 days projected on strategic outputs and key performance indicators as approved by respective institutions /organisations.

The issues include the need to ensure effective participation of all civil society and strengthening of existing partnerships and interventions needed to ensure an effective response to the growing scourge of gender violence and violation of children’s rights.

The summit targets participants from civil society, government, churches, faith based organisations, non-government organisations, women organisations, gender and children’s rights activists and stakeholder organisations in general.
