North West Health to intensify TB case finding in an informal settlement near Rustenburg as part of World TB Day commemoration

YIZO YIZO, a mining informal settlement community in Tlhabane near Rustenburg will be a centre of attention this coming Friday, 23 March 2012.

Health MEC, Dr Magome Masike together with other Members of Executive Council will lead a team of healthcare workers, Directly Observed Therapy Supporters and developmental partners in Intensified Tuberculosis (TB) case finding to commemorate World TB Day.

The team will assemble at Rustenburg Local Municipality at 9h00 before departing for YIZO YIZO to do a door to door TB screening. Those found to have TB will be put on treatment immediately.

Intensified TB case finding has been identified as one of the key priority areas critical to the success of department’s effort to promote greater community involvement in disease management, community development, and empowerment to deal with own health issues and promote an integrated healthcare management system.

TB case finding proved to be the most effective method to intensify community education on Tuberculosis, improve treatment adherence of all diagnosed patients, solicit treatment support for all patients on treatment by their immediate family members, and improve TB outcomes when it was piloted in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District in January 2011.

The door to door TB screening will be followed by a TB Summit scheduled to start at 13h00 at the Rustenburg Civic Centre. At the summit, MEC Masike is expected to launch the North West province’s Integrated Implementation Plan for HIV, TB and Sexually Transmitted Infections for financial year 2012/13.

The media is invited.
