North West to empower Road Safety Officers for roll-out of PET Road Safety programme

The North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison is to host a provincial Participatory Education Techniques (PET) workshop for all its Road Safety Officers on Monday 16 May 2011 in Rustenburg.

The objective of the one day train-the trainer workshop is to deepen understanding of the PET guidelines among road safety officers in order to ensure effective implementation of the programme and increased participation of schools across the province.

The rollout of the programme is aimed at creating road safety awareness among learners. It is specifically targeted at Grade 10 and 11 high school learners as champions. It is intended to encourage them to identify road safety related problems affecting their communities and to find solutions by way of research thereby empowering them with a hands on opportunity to solve their community road safety problems.

Provincial MEC, Desbo Mohono says that after the workshop, Road Safety Officers from her department would be expected to cascade the research workshop in their respective districts, recruit, empower school teams on research methodologies, support them as they prepare presentations and models illustrating their community road safety problem and researched solutions.

The PET programme which was at its inception stages piloted in partnership with the Road Safety Management Corporation is now a national flagship programme in its third year of implementation in partnership with the Department of Basic Education.
