No break for busy labour officials

Hot on the heels of a taxing and rigorous inspection of the restaurants sector, inspectors of the Department of Labour will take the bull by its horns when they turn their attention to the hospitality industry.

This time around they will look at the occupational health and safety aspects as well as compliance with all labour laws ahead of the hectic 2010 period. The campaign will take place between 9 and 13 November across all provinces.

In the Free State a series of advocacy sessions are currently taking place across the province since beginning of last week as a build up to the nationwide inspections.

Zakes Mogwatlhe, executive manager in the inspection and enforcement division of the department said: “We will leave no stone unturned as we go through the industry with a fine tooth comb like we did with restaurants during inspections at shopping malls two weeks ago.”

The drive saw officials serving prohibition notices and shutting down the operations of non-compliant employers while at the same time instructing others with lesser offences to correct their infractions within 60 days or face prosecution by the Labour Court.

The inspections will bring to an end a busy schedule for the year that saw officials visiting agriculture, iron and steel and construction sectors. It is the first in the hospitality industry since labour Minister, Membathisi Mdladlana, launched the sectoral wage industry determination more than two years ago. The law put in place minimum wages as well as conditions of employment in the industry.
