New survey provides insight into the quality of life in the Gauteng city region

The Gauteng City Region Observatory (GCRO), a partnership between the University of Johannesburg (UJ), the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and Gauteng Provincial Government has completed a survey on the quality of life in the Gauteng city region and will release the findings on Thursday, 27 May.

GCRO is a research centre dedicated to analysing and benchmarking the Gauteng city region against others world-wide city regions. The observatory also provides policy guidance on improving the sustainability, growth path and cohesion of the city region.

The survey, with a sample of 6 600 randomly selected residents of Gauteng, covered various issues. Key findings to be released include:

* The pros and cons of living in the Gauteng city region, the economic engine of the continent
* On-going extreme xenophobia cutting across race and class
* Data on access to housing, basic services and transport, and the perceived quality of these services
* Nuanced attitudes to different spheres of government and service delivery, with the local sphere (facing elections) attracting the most criticism
* The survey included a detailed index for measuring decent work, which we analyse by sector and across the different metros and municipalities within the GCR
* Attitudes to race are analysed in some detail, alongside the quality and resilience of democracy in the city region.

Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane will respond to the key findings of the survey.
